Pre-race preps for the spectator

20 March 2016

The cycling season is on! So it’s time to tune in, sit back and enjoy the rides. But once you’re all set up and the race is on its way, what are the crucial moments you should be spotting? If you have asked yourself this question, you will love The Recon Ride. A new free podcast show powered by VeloNews.

What to watch

Today 168 elite women cyclists are competing in the Trofeo Alfredo Binda, the third UCI Women’s World Tour race of 2016.  It’s not easy to find live coverage of the Trofeo Binda (unless you live in Italy), but UCI is doing a good job at sharing women’s race info and videos after the race with their chronicles.

Most of the men’s pro races however are broadcasted live, like yesterdays Milan – San Remo, also known as La Primavera, the first of the five Monuments. These are prestigious one-day races, and together with the three grand tours they are the ones to win. Read all about these races here.

Right, so once you know a little about the ranking of the race, you then need to know how to watch it. Because the more you know, the more interesting it is. And that’s why I would like to introduce you to Dane Cash and Cosmo Catalano from the Recon Ride.

The Recon Ride podcasts

Cosmo Catalano used to upload his ‘How the race was won’ video’s on Youtube.
In these 4 or 5 minutes video’s Cosmo would quickly analyse the race using tv footage, with added highlights and funny notes. Unfortunately, Cosmo stopped making these videos after last years Tour de France. Luckily, he did not leave us in the dark, and started a new project called the Recon Ride. These are 30 minute podcasts where Cosmo and Dane Cash (founder & editor at VeloHuman.com) talk about the race, before its starts.

Easy Listening

To be honest, the 5 minute video’s Cosmo made, were more fun. But, the podcasts give you a pleasant mix of information from the weather forecast to the hardest climbs along the route. They also talk about the history of the race and predict the outcome. Importantly, the broadcasts are very easy listening. Both Cosmo and Dane don’t try too hard to entertain and have lots of knowledge between them. They get some good guests in too, like top riders and cycling loving locals.

The pre-race show is perfect for a Sunday afternoon, or while driving home from work, and will make watching the race much more interesting. Plus it’s a good way to impress your friends.

In the Recon Ride’s latest podcast you’ll hear all about the Volta a Catalunya, a classic 7-day race in Spain. It starts tomorrow, so today is a good day to tune in to The Recon Ride. Enjoy!
